Day 3

Woke to thunder, lightning and yet more torrential rain. Left our B & B (Terra e Cielo, just outside Genoa) after a good nights sleep and another nice breakfast: yoghurts, bread and homemade jams, pastries and a choice of four different home-made cakes.

Luckily, Paola brought an engineer with her on the trip, so he enters the bathroom first to ascertain how the shower works. Always challenging when away from home, as you either start with a blast of freezing water, get scalded or nothing at all.

It is a shame the weather was so bad as we didn’t get to meet the donkeys or see the view. But the room was lovely; very New England in style, spotless and very comfortable beds. Can see this being a regular stop – hopefully with a chance to visit Genoa in future.

On leaving we mistook the turn in the rain and mist.We ended up on someone’s driveway on a 1-in-1 slope with hairpin bends that then had to be reversed up as the only other way out was an underpass about 2″ too narrow for the car.  Now in Lucca for lunch Japanese style – the first place we found where we could park (a car full of stuff plus dog) outside: not expecting great things but who knows, it might be the best outside Tokyo!

UPDATE: well, that was “interesting.” I don’t think we will be making a note of that as a place to eat next time we are in Lucca…
